Fitness Files – #1 March

Flashback to the end of 2014, I promised myself that I would get fitter and ultimately lose some weight… with a few *cough cough* failed attempts during 2015 I eventually joined the gym back in September of last year!  Although progress has been slow, I have started to enjoy it a lot more than I initially thought I would.


I bought myself nice workout gear and gave myself a kick up the butt to get myself into the gym!  But as always, plans seem to change with a busy work and university schedule so I aim to go to the gym at least twice a week!  I paid an upfront cost to join the gym for this academic year, i.e. from September 2015 to May/June 2016, having a chunk of money disappear from my bank account has really helped with lacking motivation = do not waste your money Emily!  Having someone to go with as a friend and confidence booster is really helpful and if you usually find the session drags a little, a quick gossip soon makes the time fly!  It is a great way to catch up with friends and to feel more confident, even if you don’t actually lose any weight.

I attend the gym located on my university’s campus and I typically aim to be there for 8am as it tends to be fairly quiet if not empty and as they gym is not particularly large you have the freedom to choose what equipment you want to go on and the ability to make a fool of yourself without anyone watching!

I typically spend around an hour in the gym, around 20 minutes on the cross trainer, 15 minutes on the treadmill (alternating between running and a fast paced walk to raise my heartbeat and get the blood pumping), 20 minutes on the bikes and a final 5 minutes on the weights; usually pushing and pulling things of all description… I honestly don’t know what they are called or how to describe them so lets just say ‘weights’.

So far I have not experienced any dramatic weight loss, which is something I have since realised that I am not too fussed about achieving.  Medically I am an average weight for my height and being healthy is a lot to be admired, ultimately I still have self-confidence issues and my weight will always be one of those but I am working towards that.  Currently I am enjoying focusing on improving my health and general fitness, especially for shopping trips and to get myself up and motivated!  I have learnt that going to the gym is not all about losing weight, but the overall experience, the people and health improvements are also included!
